HISTORY OF BAUME & MERCIER
Established in 1830, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer Baume & Mercier was regarded as the benchmark for sports luxury watches of the 20th century. The business has built a reputation for its brand worldwide because of its dedication to top quality and style. While the company has had recent achievements, the Baume & Mercier brand has more to offer than just accurate sports watches.
Baume & Mercier, in the small village of Les Bois, has been established by the Baume family. For several years, the family was involved in watchmaking. In 1844, however, things changed when Joseph Baume went to England and established commercial ties that helped establish distant markets in Australia and New Zealand. They were initially based on producing pocket watches. Their primary markets are currently located in European counties like Italy, Spain, and France. The company is keen on who sells its watches and, as a result, has 220 hand-picked retailers around the world. The company has had much success in the world of watchmaking through this approach.
Baume & Mercier watches were awarded in a competition in 1893 at Kew-Tedding, with 91.9 out of 100 to highlight their success. The market that Baume established abroad and its competitive success helped the family rely on their reputation for producing and selling their luxurious watches worldwide.
In 1912, William Baume met a jeweler called Paul Mercier at a jewelry and watch shop in Geneva. This meeting eventually led to the signing in November 1918 of an agreement creating Baume & Mercier as a corporation. This partnership has proven to be excellent cooperation for both parties. In 1921, the company was honored by the coveted Poincon de Geneva, who recognized them for their flawless high-quality timepieces. In 1937, the two figures, William Baume and Paul Mercier retired and left the business in their internships jeweler Constantine de Gorski and master jeweler Robert Peron.
Baume & Mercier focused on traditional male watches, sports chronographs, and lady watches after World War II. The business was acquired shortly afterward by the Piaget family and subsequently produced their calendar watches with a mini rotor. In 1970, the company began to shift towards quartz movement, and by the end of 1983, Baume & Mercer ceased production of mechanical watches. In 1988, Piaget sold 60 percent of the business to Piaget Holding S.A., which was then sold to Cartier Monde S.A. In Paris, and until 1993, the Cartier Company became the sole owner of Baume & Mercier.
In 2004, Baume & Mercier opened a new production facility in Brenets, Switzerland. As a result of expanding their technology, they have emerged as trendsetters in the watch industry. The business has built modules called “Riviera” and “Hampton,” named after high-level meeting locations. These watches were immediately lauded by buyers, improving Baume & Mercier’s credibility.
Throughout the history of Baume & Mercier, the company has achieved worldwide recognition. Looking at the Baume & Mercier timepiece, it’s hard to deny its basic philosophy, “Accept only perfection, only manufacture watches of the highest quality.” That’s what made Baume & Mercier one of the world’s leading watch brands.
THE THEORY OF BAUME & MERCIER
Today, many demands are being made on the manufacturers of luxury watches and their products.
For example, the many magnetic fields that arise from technological advancement today affect the watches’ sensitive individual parts. For younger consumers, it is not so much a romantic bond as practical use, robustness, and longevity of a business that
determines whether or not to buy.
Baume & Mercier is conscious of these issues and tackles them in a severe way-Baume & Mercier is one of the members of the
Responsible Jewelry Council and is a member of
NGO 1001 Fountains, which is committed to providing rural citizens in Cambodia with access to safe drinking water-and to exploring new materials that are not detrimental to unknown environmental conditions. Baume & Mercier does not sacrifice its vanity in concealing its allegiance to the Richemont Party and its position as an Établisseur. Instead, the experience of several watch brands and specialized companies belonging to the company is used to ensure the further production of products of the highest standard.
